In 1690 Nathaniel Hadley established a business in Cross Street London, wherein he manufactured amongst other things, early Fire Appliances. He employed a Master Plumber by the name of Simpkin who designed and built improved pump non-return valves, and other pump components, making Hadley, Simpkin one of the prime Fire Appliance manufacturers of the day.

By 1738 business had increased to such a degree that a new Fire Appliance factory was opened in Bow Street, London, and in 1790 expanded round the corner in Long Acre. In 1791 Henry Lott, son of a wealthy landowner, joined the company, and the company name changed to Hadley, Simpkin & Lott
